Udayer Pathey - Doctoring the Future

An Educational Program designed to benefit meritorious students from the villages & small towns of West Bengal

Udayer Pathey – Scholarship program is a CSR initiative by Asia Heart Foundation with an aim of helping economically compromised students from rural Bengal to take up medical profession. This unique scheme is the brainchild of Dr.Devi Prasad Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Health.

The Program is dedicated towards selecting brilliant, deserving yet underprivileged students from rural backgrounds, who have the aptitude and the potential to become medical professionals. It was started in the year 2007 with 159 students in West Bengal.

The beneficiaries of this program are bright students from underprivileged background, who choose to study medicine, but are financially incapable or unable to continue their schooling and education. This year, Asia Heart Foundation has collaborated with Edudigm, a mentoring organization, to provide the selected students with high quality mentoring services among other benefits.

Over the last 10 years, Edudigm has mentored hundreds of students who have gone on to achieve their dreams of studying in the top medical and engineering colleges of the country- through their classroom (Arjuna) and distance learning (Eklavya) programs. These programs are designed to ensure that each student gets specialized mentoring according to their own needs.

The Udayer Pathey program follows a very careful selection process, to ensure that the program reaches out to the brightest and most deserving students who have an aptitude and are committed towards taking up science as a subject after class X, and choosing the medical profession as their careers. Social and economic background of the students are verified, before they become part of our program.

The participants of the Udayer Pathey program are motivated to use their medical education in improving health care systems in their villages, rural areas and semi-urban areas, where healthcare is not easily accessible. The student also becomes a role model in the community inspiring others to pursue this path. In other words, the multiplier effect on the society of enabling a talented child to become a doctor is huge. Every single doctor created with the assistance of this Program shall have ripple effect throughout the community.
